Somerset dropped their record down to 14-12 on Thursday, which also ended the team's four-game streak of wins. They took an 11-8 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Devine Warhorses. The Bulldogs were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Warhorses earlier this season, when they won 7-4.
Sophia Galvez was huge no matter where she played even without the win. She tossed five innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. Galvez was even better at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two stolen bases, one triple, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Karlet Sanchez was cooking despite her team's loss, going 3-for-6 with one home run. That home run marked the first that she has launched this season. Another player making a difference was Kourtney Rios, who went 2-for-5 with one triple and one run.
As for Devine, their victory was their eighth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 21-5. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.9 runs on average over those games.
Like Somerset, Devine also got a great game from a two-way player: Tucker Traylor. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over 9.2 innings while giving up five earned (and three unearned) runs off 12 hits. Traylor was also stellar in the batter's box, going 4-for-6 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. Those four hits gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Yaya Rodriguez was incredible, getting on base in four of her six plate appearances with one home run, three stolen bases, and four runs. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Maddie Brown, who went 2-for-6 with one home run, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Coming up, Somerset will welcome Cotulla at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Bulldogs' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Cowboys have averaged an impressive 8.4 runs per game this season. As for Devine, they will head out to square off against Jourdanton at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The Indians/Squaws will roll in looking for their tenth straight victory, something the Warhorses surely won't give up without a fight.
