Baseball Recap: Salem Hills Sets Scoring Season-High Against Carbon

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Salem Hills). Everything went their way against the Carbon Dinos on Thursday as the Salem Hills Skyhawks made off with a 16-1 victory. The Skyhawks have beaten the Dinos the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Dinos has come to flipping the script.

Trig Richards and Mason Ward were a major factor while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Richards pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Ward pitched two innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. That's the fewest earned runs he has allowed since back in March of 2024. At bat, Richards scored a run and stole Two bases., while Ward scored a run while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Talon Cloward, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaleb DeGraffenried, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three RBI, two runs, and one triple.

Salem Hills was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .455. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive matchups.

The win was their first on the road , bumping their record up to 2-4. As for Carbon, they have been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-7 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Salem Hills will be taking part in a tournament against Pacifica at 6:00 p.m. on March 29th. As for Carbon, they are taking a road trip to take on North Sanpete at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. North Sanpete is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.
