The Wellington Eagles will square off against the Eaton Reds at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Wellington will come into the matchup with an undefeated record on the line.
On Friday, Wellington blew past University, posting a 47-6 win. Considering the Eagles have won five contests by more than 40 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Wellington to victory, but perhaps none more so than Brayton Meglen, who rushed for 96 yards and two TDs on only nine carries, and also picked up 37 receiving yards and one touchdown. Another rusher making a difference was Cyle Kisner, who rushed for 106 yards and a pair of scores on only 11 carries.
Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something Wellington proved: they limited University to a paltry 2.7 yards per carry. The team can thank Peyton Cushman for the heroic effort on defense: he. Wellington didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 9.8.
Wellington didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Kisner and Kasen Brown.
Meanwhile, after some red-hot attacks on offense in their last three games, Eaton finally came back down to earth on Friday. They took a blow against Resurrection Christian, falling 34-7. The matchup marked the Reds' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.
Wellington will have to contain Max Blaskowski as he made an impact in Eaton's last game. He picked up 121 receiving yards and one touchdown.
Even if they lost, Eaton's defensive line still kept up the pressure with three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Cameron Southard, Austin Edelmon, and Paxton Pettinger, who each picked up one sack apiece.
Eaton's defeat ended a six-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 4-2. As for Wellington, their victory bumped their record up to 6-0.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Wellington has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 314 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Eaton struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 203.7 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Everything came up roses for Wellington against Eaton in their previous matchup back in November of 2024, as the squad secured a 45-14 win. Do the Eagles have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Reds turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
