Basketball Recap: Avon Takes a Loss

Avon was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They were one points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 66-65 heartbreaker at the hands of the Brownsburg Bulldogs. The Orioles lost against the Bulldogs in their previous head to head back in January, too, but the margin this time around was much closer than the 74-42 score last time.

Despite the loss, Avon still got an impressive performance from Aniah Smith, who went 14 for 30 on her way to 33 points in addition to seven assists and five boards. That's the most points Smith has posted since back in January. The team also got some help courtesy of Mya Thompson, who posted 14 points and three steals.

Leading Brownsburg to victory were Avery Gordon and Elle Mcculloch. Gordon dropped a double-double on 28 points and 19 boards, while Mcculloch went 5 of 11 on her way to 17 points. Mcculloch is trending in the right direction considering she's improved her point production for three straight games. Delaney Steers was another key player, putting up seven points.

Avon's loss dropped their record down to 8-6. As for Brownsburg, the win (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 10-2.

Avon will be taking part in a tournament against Silver Creek at 11:45 a.m. on Friday. Avon is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 62.1 points per game this season. As for Brownsburg, they will look to defend their home court on December 27th against Lawrence North at 7:30 p.m. Brownsburg knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past six matches -- so hopefully Lawrence North likes a good challenge.
