Tupelo is 6-1 against East Union since April of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. Tupelo will head out on the road to challenge East Union at 1:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Tupelo is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Mississippi's top teams: Madison Central, who was ranked second at the time (Tupelo was ranked 18th). Tupelo blew past Madison Central 13-5 on Friday. The Golden Wave not only won on Friday, but they posted their biggest win since February 25th.
Brody Wilson was a major factor no matter where he played. He tossed 6.1 innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off nine hits. Wilson was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most hits he has posted since back in February.
In other batting news, Landon Swinney was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. Those five RBI gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Tyler Johnson, who scored a run while going 1-for-4.
Tupelo kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in three consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, East Union had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8 runs) and they went ahead and made it six on Friday. They were the clear victors by a 9-3 margin over the Lions.
Ben Basil spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up seven Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Drew Hollimon and Tristian Baldwyn did most of the damage at the plate: Hollimon scored two runs while going 3-for-4, while Baldwyn scored a run while going 1-for-3. Heath Wilkinson also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.
East Union's record now sits at 17-3. As for Tupelo, they moved to 11-8 with that win, which also ended their three-game losing streak.
Tupelo couldn't quite finish off East Union when the teams last played back in April of 2023 and fell 6-4. Can Tupelo avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
