Basketball Recap: Yuba City Takes Loss Despite Strong Performances from Jay Rai and Alex Saavedra

Yuba City was the 53-42 winner over Nevada Union when they last played one another back in December of 2022, but their luck changed this time around. The Yuba City Honkers fell to the Nevada Union Miners 62-58. While losing is never fun, the Honkers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 787th, while the Miners are ranked 361st).

Yuba City's loss on Wednesday came despite strong showings from Alex Saavedra and Jay Rai. Saavedra posted 20 points, while Rai went 5 of 12 on his way to 15 points and seven rebounds. Those seven boards gave Rai a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Ryan Sandhu, who earned six points and three steals.

This is the second loss in a row for Yuba City and nudges their season record down to 7-15. As for Nevada Union, the win snapped their losing streak at three games and leaves them with a 14-8 record.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Yuba City will venture away from home to face off against Roseville at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Roseville is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 66.6 points per game this season. As for Nevada Union, they will head out on the road to challenge River Valley at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
