Basketball Game Preview: Gabrielino Eagles vs. South El Monte Eagles

Gabrielino has gone 10-0 against South El Monte recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Wednesday. After both having extra time off, the two teams will shake off the cobwebs and challenge one another at 5:00 p.m. Having both just faced considerable losses, both teams are looking to turn things around.

Back in December of 2024, Gabrielino took a blow against Arcadia, falling 58-27. While losing is never fun, the Eagles can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 790th, while the Apaches are ranked 290th).

Despite the loss, Gabrielino had strong showings from Shannon Yan, who posted 12 points, and Ava Yamashita, who had eight points. What's more, Yan also racked up three assists, the most she's had since back in December of 2023.

Meanwhile, South El Monte was not able to break out of their rough patch last Saturday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They were dealt a 62-17 loss at the hands of Los Osos. The Eagles were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 32-7.

South El Monte's defeat dropped their record down to 4-9. As for Gabrielino, their loss dropped their record down to 5-8.

Everything came up roses for Gabrielino against South El Monte when the teams last played back in January of 2024, as the team secured a 58-15 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Gabrielino since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
