The Marquette Redmen had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9.2 points), and they went ahead and made it six on Friday. They took down Gaylord 66-49. Given Marquette's advantage in MaxPreps' Michigan basketball rankings (they are ranked 61st, while Gaylord is ranked 276th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Despite the loss, Gaylord still got an impressive performance from Luke Gelow, who scored 28 points along with seven rebounds. That was a full 57.1% of Gaylord's points, marking the 14th time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Collin Piehl, who scored four points along with three steals.
Marquette's win bumped their record up to 9-3. As for Gaylord, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost six of their last seven contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-9 record this season.
Marquette will head out on the road to take on Westwood at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Gaylord, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Alpena at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
