Portage hasn't had much luck against Hobart recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Indians will square off against the Brickies at 7:00 p.m. The two teams are strolling into their contests after big wins in their previous games.
Portage is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Tuesday. Their pitchers stepped up to hand Merrillville a 14-0 shutout. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Indians considering their one-run performance the match before.
Breanna Reed was a standout: she got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since May 3rd. Savannah Riley was another key player, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, two doubles, and one run.
Portage always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .576. They are 7-1 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Meanwhile, Hobart got the win against Hammond Central on Wednesday by a conclusive 19-0. That looming 19-0 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Brickies yet this season.
Hobart got a massive performance out of Addisyn Johnson, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Addi Gaffin, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.
The win made it two in a row for Hobart and bumps their season record up to 12-14. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 3 runs in those games. As for Portage, their record is now 10-18.
Wednesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Portage hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .358. However, it's not like Hobart struggles in that department as they've averaged .333. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Portage suffered a grim 15-9 defeat to Hobart in their previous matchup back in April. Can the Indians avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
