No. 16
St. John's (Washington, D.C.) needed overtime but the Cadets grabbed their second resume-building win in a week with a 42-39 victory over previous No. 4
Sidwell Friends (Washington, D.C.) in the DCSAA AA title game on Sunday.
The win bumps St. John's nine spots in this week's MaxPreps Top 25 high school girls basketball rankings. Against Sidwell Friends,
Kyndal Walker had 18 points and
Morgan Stewart completed an and-one late in the game that helped St. John's grab the district title.
Sidwell Friends fell to No. 18.
The final four in California's Open Division bracket features No. 1
Archbishop Mitty (San Jose), No. 3
Etiwanda, No. 4
Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) and 31-2
Clovis West (Fresno), which is on the bubble this week.
Etiwanda beat Sierra Canyon 65-44 last week and the two programs will reprise their Southern Section clash Tuesday. This is the third straight season they have met for the Southern California regional title with Sierra Canyon winning the state title in 2022 and Etiwanda grabbing the crown last season.
Top-ranked Archbishop Mitty was back to full-strength Saturday in its 82-71 win over Folsom. UConn commit
Morgan Cheli and Lehigh commit
Belle Bramer didn't start, but played measured minutes as sophomore
McKenna Woliczko led Mitty with 28 points and nine boards in the victory.
Two Georgia teams in the MaxPreps Top 25, No. 6
Grayson (Loganville, Ga.) and No. 10
Hebron Christian (Dacula, Ga.), are fighting for Peach State titles this week.
Grayson, looking for its first state title, has won four playoff games by an average of 35 points and take on
North Paulding (Dallas, Ga.) on Saturday in the AAAAAAA final.
In AAA, Hebron Christian routed Monroe 97-42 in the semifinals as
Mia James led five players in double figures with 24 points and 10 assists. Hebron plays
Wesleyan (Norcross, Ga.) on Friday for the championship.
One year after being banned from the postseason in Texas due to rules infractions, No. 11
Duncanville returned with a vengeance. The Pantherettes needed overtime to get past
Summer Creek (Houston) 39-31 in the semifinals and then put an exclamation on their 12th state title with a 59-41 victory over
South Grand Prairie (Grand Prairie).
Senior
Mariah Clayton earned MVP honors for Duncanville after scoring 15 of her 19 points in the second half of the Class 6A state championship game in the title game.
Sophomore McKenna Woliczko has been a major reason No. 1 Archbishop Mitty is on the cusp of reaching its third straight CIF Open Division title game. With UConn commit Morgan Cheli out for the past month, Woliczko has stepped up, averaging more than 26 points over the past nine contests. (Photo: Greg Jungferman)
