Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Petal walked away with it. Everything went their way against the Ocean Springs Greyhounds on Thursday as they made off with a 9-3 win. Considering the Panthers have won 14 contests by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Petal got a great performance from Cooper Giger as he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 12 over 6.2 innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts Giger has posted since back in March.
At the plate, Trey Barnes was incredible, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one home run and four RBI. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Fischer Howell, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base.
The victory snapped Petal's losing streak at four games and leaves them with a 18-12 record. As for Ocean Springs, their loss ended a six-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 25-4.
Petal will have a chance to go back-to-back against the Greyhounds: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
