The Oasis Academy Bighorns will square off against the West Wendover Wolverines at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Oasis Academy has five straight victories, West Wendover has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
While Oasis Academy's win against Silver Stage wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Bighorns skirted past the Nighthawks 9-7.
Ryder McNabb and Jose Montalvo did most of the damage at the plate: McNabb went 3-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and one stolen base, while Montalvo went 3-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. That's the most RBI McNabb has posted since back in April of 2025. The team also got some help courtesy of Tyler Clark, who went 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
Oasis Academy was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .516. They are 11-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when West Wendover and North Tahoe meet (two straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Saturday. The Wolverines fell just short of the Lakers by a score of 5-4.
Aidien Rodriguez was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He is becoming a predictor of West Wendover's success: when he allows at most one hit the team is 7-3 (and 5-7 when he doesn't). Rodriguez was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run.
In other batting news, Ciano Dorado made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one double. Another player making a difference was Danny Soriano, who went 2-for-4 with one run.
Oasis Academy's victory bumped their record up to 13-8. As for West Wendover, their defeat dropped their record down to 12-10.
West Wendover's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Oasis Academy hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .389. It's a different story for West Wendover, though, as they've only averaged .213. Will they be able to contain Oasis Academy's hitters?
Oasis Academy skirted past West Wendover 9-7 in their previous meeting back in May of 2025. Do the Bighorns have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Wolverines turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
