League recap: The Academy wins, gets boost in standings

The Academy was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from sixth to fourth in 2A Flatirons. The Wildcats beat The Pinnacle 48-0 earlier in the week.

Faith Christian moved up to 52 from 81 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Eagles were able to make the jump by beating Middle Park 43-9.

Faith Christian's dynamic duo of Rory Gishwiller and Tucker Tuck proved tough for the Panthers to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Gishwiller threw for 70 yards and one touchdown and Tuck had 55 yards receiving. Deven Tyler helped Faith Christian's passing attack out by catching one ball for 42 yards.

Ty Overturf was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 25 carries, he ran for 236 yards as Bishop Machebeuf beat Middle Park. Teammate Jack Tighe added to the ground attack by rushing for 16 yards.

Barton Taylor made the biggest impact on defense this week as the Eagles topped Troy Schmidt's team. The 6-foot-0 senior forced one fumble and grabbed one sack.

The Timberwolves' Hector Venegas and Chris Genovez have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 2A Flatirons in both passing and receiving yards. Venegas has thrown for 516 yards this season, while Genovez, a 6-foot-0 receiver, has 12 catches for 209 yards. Overturf from the Buffaloes leads the league in rushing with 637 yards.

The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Bishop Machebeuf takes on second place Middle Park. Bishop Machebeuf topped KIPP Denver Collegiate last week, while the Panthers fell to Faith Christian.

Two of the top units in the league will face off this week when the Eagles take on The Pinnacle. Faith Christian's offense has scored 151 points this season, good for No. 1 in the league, while Eric Hahn's team has allowed only 170 on the year.

The Academy led the league in scoring this week after putting up 48 points on the Timberwolves.
