Softball Game Preview: Whitko Wildcats vs. Peru Tigers

Whitko and Peru are an even 4-4 against one another since May of 2016, but likely not for long. The Wildcats will be playing in front of their home fans against the Tigers at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Neither of those teams managed to put together many runs in their previous contests, so the offenses might be a little more motivated than usual.

Whitko fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Rochester on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Zebras by a score of 2-1. The Wildcats haven't had much luck with the Zebras recently, as the team has come up short the last four times they've met.

Addie Garr spent all 7.2 innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on three hits and racked up ten Ks. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Whitko saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kaylee Adkins, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one RBI.

Meanwhile, Peru fell victim to Northwestern and their airtight pitching crew on Monday. They fell just short of Northwestern by a score of 1-0. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Peru's defeat dropped their record down to 10-9. As for Whitko, their loss dropped their record down to 15-6.

Whitko's speedy runners might be the difference in Wednesday's contest. The Wildcats have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.5 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Peru, though, as they've been averaging an even more impressive 1.3 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Whitko continue to outrun the ball?

Whitko couldn't quite finish off Peru in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 and fell 7-5. Can the Wildcats avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
