Baseball Recap: Sedgwick County Has No Trouble Against Caliche

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Merino, Sedgwick County was happy to have turned things around on Tuesday. Everything went their way against the Caliche Buffaloes as they made off with a 12-6 victory. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Cougars also won the last time the pair played back in March of 2024.

Tate Renquist made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out six over six innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and two doubles. He has become a key player for Sedgwick County: the team is 6-2 when he posts at least two runs, but 1-8 otherwise.

Renquist wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Roman Kirk, who went 4-for-5 with one home run, four runs, and three RBI. Those four hits gave Kirk a new career-high. Braxton Lovenburg was another, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases and one RBI.

Sedgwick County kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

Sedgwick County has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 7-10 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.0 runs over those games. As for Caliche, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-12 record this season.

Sedgwick County is taking a road trip to face off against Highland at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. The Cougars' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Huskies have averaged an impressive 10.7 runs per game this season. As for Caliche, they will take on Otis at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Buffaloes' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Bulldogs have averaged an impressive 11.7 runs per game this season.
