III Section I recap Nov. 7, 2012
Nogales scored a stunning upset when it knocked off Sabino, 36-34. At the time, the Sabercats were ranked 22nd in the state, while the Apaches were 66th.
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Sabino, who took down 22nd ranked Sabino, 36-34. Marcel Renteria threw for 195 yards and two touchdowns and ran for seven yards in the win.
Layne Roshay and Matt Guida gave Queen Creek a balanced attack through the air and ground last week. Roshay threw for 14 yards and 14 touchdowns, while Guida ran for 193 yards. Teammate Marcus Still added to the ground attack by rushing for 135 yards.
Brian McCarty was the best wideout in III Section I this week as Nogales bested Jay Campos' team. McCarty racked up three receptions for 96 yards. Mikey Lopez helped Nogales' passing attack out by catching four balls for 61 yards.
Thanks to the talents of Carson Jones and Guida the Bulldogs have been able to do all sorts of things on offense. Jones leads the league in passing with 1746 yards, while Guida has rushed for 2164 yards this season. The Sabercats' Matt Bushman leads the league in receiving yards with 951 on 41 catches.
Williams Field was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from fourth to second in the league. Earlier in the week, the Black Hawks triumphed over Campo Verde 20-12.
