Even though Tivy scored an imposing 71 points on Tuesday, Veterans Memorial still came out on top. Veterans Memorial walked away with an 84-71 win over Tivy. Given Veterans Memorial's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 14th, while Tivy is ranked 329th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Veterans Memorial had a senior duo take command as Gervai Maeweathers went 6 for 9 from beyond the arc en route to 30 points and 0 assists and Demarion Dennis scored 19 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Maeweathers has scored all season. Devin McCloud was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with eight assists and two steals.
Meanwhile, Canyon pushed their score all the way to 56 on Tuesday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell to Wagner 61-56.
Veterans Memorial's victory was their eighth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 33-1. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 67.5 points per game. As for Canyon, they have been struggling recently as they've lost ten of their last 12 matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-25 record this season.
Everything went Veterans Memorial's way against Canyon in their previous matchup back in January as Veterans Memorial made off with a 73-51 win. Will Veterans Memorial repeat their success, or does Canyon have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
