After flying high against River Valley last Thursday, Athens came back down to earth. The Bulldogs fell 3-1 to the Alexander Spartans on Tuesday. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Spartans this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 3-0 back in September.
Athens started the match hot and won the first set, but they struggled down the stretch and lost the last three. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 24-26, 25-22, 25-13, 25-18.
Mabel Monday paced Athens' offense, picking up nine kills. Monday got some help from Evie Garland and her 13 assists. Finally, Monday was also a dominant defender, finishing with a team-high three blocks.
Leading Alexander to victory were Abbi Ohms and Ava McCall. Ohms had 25 digs and five aces, while McCall had 15 digs. That's the most digs Ohms has posted over her last seven matches. Laney Douglas also deserves some recognition as she had her first block of the season.
Athens' loss ended a three-match streak of wins at home and dropped them to 15-6. As for Alexander, the victory (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 18-3.
Athens wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 3-1 win against Meigs on the 9th. As for Alexander, they have also already played their next matchup, a 3-0 victory against Vinton County on the 9th.
