Even though the Pueblo West Cyclones scored an imposing 64 points on Friday, the Pueblo South Colts still came out on top. Pueblo South skirted past Pueblo West 67-64. That result was just more of the same for these two, as Pueblo South also won the last time the pair played back in February of 2023.
It was another big night for Maurice Austin, who scored 35 points along with eight rebounds and six assists. That makes it 15 consecutive games in which he has scored at least a third of Pueblo South's points. Another player making a difference was Jayvion Aragon, who scored 13 points along with two steals.
Despite the loss, Pueblo West still got an impressive performance from Andrew Trujillo, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 20 rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Trujillo has scored all season. Malachi Stump was another key contributor, scoring 15 points along with four steals.
Even though they lost, Pueblo West smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 22 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Pueblo South only pulled down nine offensive rebounds.
Pueblo South is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a nice bump to their 8-8 record this season. As for Pueblo West, their loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 10-7.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Pueblo South won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Cheyenne Mountain at 1:00 p.m. on January 27th. Cheyenne Mountain will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Colorado Rankings (they are ranked 243rd, while Pueblo South is ranked 91st). As for Pueblo West, they will head out on the road to square off against Pueblo County at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Pueblo County focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 18 on Friday.
