MaxPreps Midwest Top 25 high school football rankings

Montini (Lombard, Ill.) vaulted from No. 16 to 11 and two new teams entered the fifth weekly MaxPreps Midwest Top 25 football rankings: Washington (Massillon, Ohio) at No. 19 and Lawrence Free State (Lawrence, Kan.) at No. 25.

1. (1 last week) Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati) 5-0
Sophomore Matt Coghlin kicked a 35-yard field goal to nip then No. 6 St. Xavier (Cincinnati) in a 20-17 overtime thriller. He also booted a 30-yarder with one second left to send the game into overtime. Junior Matt Crable , subbing for injured Gus Ragland, completed 13 of 30 passes for 126 yards.

2. (2) Colerain (Cincinnati) 5-0
The Cardinals flew past Hamilton (Ohio) 57-7 as senior quarterback Kelvin Cook completed six of eight passes for 174 yards and four touchdowns. DeTuan Smith ran just four times, but gained 103 yards and scored twice and Tegray Scales returned an interception for a 60-yard touchdown.

3. (3) Mount Carmel (Chicago) 5-0
Mount Carmel throttled Catholic League rival St. Rita (Chicago) 24-3 for its 700th victory, second only in the state to East St. Louis. Matt Domer ran 15 times for 166 yards and a trio of touchdowns, while Marko Boricich gained 117 yards on 11 carries.

 4. (4) St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio) 5-0
The Eagles routed McDowell (Erie, Pa.) 56-7 behind Brett Kean, who completed 12 of 17 passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran three yards for a fourth score.

5. (5) Cass Tech (Detroit) 5-0
The Technicians roared to a 63-0 halftime lead en route to a 76-0 victory over Central (Detroit), which is coach Thomas Wilcher's alma mater. Mike Weber ran for over 200 yards, all in the first half. Phillip Parham made two interceptions and seven solo tackles, while Damon Webb scored twice on punt returns.

6. (7) Brother Rice (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) 5-0
The Warriors nipped archrival Central Catholic (Novi, Mich.) 28-21 on a 35-yard pass from Alex Malzone to Patrick Sparks with 33 seconds left. Brian Walker ran 21 times for 164 yards in the battle of unbeatens before a crowd of 6,500.

7. (8) Center Grove (Greenwood, Ind.) 6-0
Logan Hutson scored twice on runs and once on a reception to spark a 42-10 victory over Lawrence North (Indianapolis).

8. (10) Blue Springs (Mo.) 5-0
The Wildcats defeated Liberty (Mo.) 38-21 with a punishing ground attack as Dalvin Warmack ran for 185 yards and four touchdowns. Darrius Shepherd made 10 catches for 164 yards and one touchdown.

9. (11) Eden Prairie (Minn.) 4-0

10. (6) St. Xavier (Cincinnati) 3-2
The Bombers were nipped by No. 1 Moeller (Cincinnati) 20-17 in overtime before a crowd of 8,000 at the University of Cincinnati. Nick Tensing completed 20 of 31 passes for 209 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

11. (16) Montini (Lombard, Ill.) 5-0
The Broncos dealt Marmion Academy (Aurora, Ill.) its first loss, 27-3, behind the passing of Alex Wills, who completed 24 of 32 for 208 yards and two touchdowns. Mason Weissenhofer kicked field goals of 37 and 34 yards, while defensive end Edgar Ruano (6-2, 250) returned an interception for a 43-yard touchdown.

12. (13) Glenbard West (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) 4-1
The Hilltoppers rolled past Hinsdale Central (Hinsdale, Ill.) 37-7. Donahvon Vaughn carried 17 times for 181 yards and Scott Andrews scored on three short runs.

13. (14) Dowling (West Des Moines, Iowa) 5-0
The Maroons whipped Mason City (Iowa) 49-13 behind the passing of Ryan Boyle, who completed seven of 10 for 151 yards and three touchdowns.

14. (9) Wheaton-Warrenville South (Wheaton, Ill.) 4-1
The Tigers were handed their first loss, 21-14, by North (Naperville, Ill.). Four turnovers set the stage for a major upset.

15. (17) Xavier (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) 5-0
The Saints held Kennedy (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) to 74 yards and four first downs during a 24-0 victory before a crowd of 6,000. Brendan Miller set the pace by carrying 28 times for 154 yards and one touchdown.

16. (18) Homestead (Mequon, Wis.) 6-0
The Highlanders defeated Cedarburg (Wis.) 35-31, despite yielding two touchdowns in the last 40 seconds. Eric Wade ran for 208 yards and three touchdowns.

17. (19) Penn (Mishawaka, Ind.) 6-0
The Kingsmen scored all their points in the first half during a 58-0 rout of Washington (South Bend, Ind.). Zach Oakley completed eight of 11 passes for 115 yards and four touchdowns — all in the first half.

18. (15) Lincoln-Way East (Frankfort, Ill.) 4-1
The Griffins were handed their first loss 24-21 by undefeated Homewood-Flossmoor (Flossmoor, Ill.), a team which had not beaten them in 10 years. Jordan Wirtz completed 13 of 21 passes for 151 yards and one touchdown.

19. (NR) Washington (Massillon, Ohio) 5-0
The Tigers claimed their first win since 1977 at Steubenville (Ohio) with a 37-21 verdict. Lyron Wilson carried 24 times for 234 yards and three touchdowns to help offset 14 penalties and two touchdowns which were called back.

20. (20) Carmel (Ind.) 4-2
Shakir Paschall ran for 101 yards and a trio of touchdowns to spark a 42-7 rout of North Central (Indianapolis).

21. (21) Wheaton North (Wheaton, Ill.) 4-1
Northwestern University recruit Clayton Thorson put on a show during a 42-17 victory over Lake Park (Roselle, Ill.). He passed for 273 yards and four touchdowns, while running for 90 yards and a fifth score.

22. (22) Dakota (Macomb, Mich.) 5-0
The Cougars posted their third shutout with a 24-0 victory over Utica Eisenhower (Shelby Township, Mich.) and they gave up just 38 yards. Tyler Crowell completed 16 of 24 passes for 176 yards and one touchdown.

23. (23) Omaha North (Neb.) 5-0
Junior standout Calvin Strong ran 31 times for 306 yards and five touchdowns and sat out the fourth quarter during a 46-16 victory against Papillion-LaVista South (Papillion, Neb.).

24. (24) Lincoln (Sioux Falls, S.D.) 5-0
The Patriots posted a 28-7 victory over Brookings (S.D.). Caden Quintanilla ran 29 times for 215 yards and two touchdowns and picked up a third score on a reception.

25. (NR) Lawrence Free State (Lawrence, Kan.) 4-0
The Firebirds upset previously No. 25-ranked West (Shawnee Mission, Kan.), 35-14. Senior quarterback Joe Dineen led the way by completing eight of 15 passes for 181 yards and three touchdowns and running for an additional 56 yards.

No. 12 St. Ignatius (Cleveland) lost to Paramus Catholic (N.J.) 44-10.
No. 25 West (Shawnee Mission, Kan.) lost to Lawrence Free State (Lawrence, Kan.) 35-14.

The Midwestern region includes all teams from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
