Basketball Recap: Coventry Falls Short Against Ranked West Warwick

On Monday, Coventry faced West Warwick in a battle between two of the state's top teams. The Coventry Oakers took a 62-49 hit to the loss column at the hands of the West Warwick Wizards. The match marked the Oakers' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

Coventry's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Tyler Broady, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and ten boards. Broady is crushing it when it comes to rebounds: he's pulled down at least eight every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Brayden Martin, who posted ten points and seven assists.

Even though they lost, Coventry was working as a unit and finished the game with 19 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as West Warwick only racked up 12 assists.

Leading West Warwick to victory were Owen Stearns and Colin Kelly. Stearns went 9 of 18 on his way to 23 points and five steals, while Kelly went 6 of 9 on his way to 13 points in addition to eight rebounds and three blocks. That makes it four consecutive games in which Stearns has scored at least a third of West Warwick's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Trevone Chase, who had nine points and six boards.

Coventry's loss dropped their record down to 7-3. As for West Warwick, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-2.

Coventry will challenge Moses Brown at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Moses Brown will roll in looking for their sixth straight win, something Coventry surely won't give up without a fight. As for West Warwick, they will welcome Tiverton at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday. West Warwick is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 65 points per game this season.
