Rockhurst (Kansas City, Mo.) captured the lead on a rushing touchdown with 1:00 left in the fourth quarter to defeat
Hutchinson (Kan.) 35-31 on Saturday.
After taking the lead on a touchdown run by
Trevor Turner, the Salt Hawks went into halftime with a 17-10 lead. The Hawklets took the lead for good with a touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Despite scoring three points in the third, Rockhurst still trailed by 11 points going into the fourth quarter. But 22 points in the fourth helped RHS pull out the victory.
The Kansas City school looked to be in trouble when it trailed by 18 points before coming back to beat Hutchinson.
HHS's
Wil Smith was the standout player for his team. The senior ran for two touchdowns.
Last season's game between the teams resulted in a 35-20 win for the Hawklets.
The loss comes after Hutchinson defeated Haysville Campus 56-0 last week. The victory was a step in the right direction for Rockhurst, which was coming off a 38-24 defeat at the hands of Blue Springs in its previous game. The loss snapped the Salt Hawks' 2-game winning streak. The victory snapped RHS's 2-game losing streak.
Hutchinson (2-1) will play a Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail Division I game against Newton next week, while Rockhurst (2-2) will take on Blue Springs South in a non-conference game.
