Softball Recap: Newton-Conover Puts Losing Streak Behind Them

Newton-Conover had to endure a 16-game losing streak dating back to last season, but that streak is no more. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Hickory Red Tornadoes on Friday, sneaking past 9-8. This was a revenge game for the Red Devils: when they faced off against the Red Tornadoes last Tuesday, they had to take a 12-2 defeat.

Jacie Pruitt was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over seven innings while giving up three earned (and five unearned) runs off ten hits. Pruitt was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing Four bases. while going 3-for-3.

In other batting news, Newton-Conover let Whitney Spleet and McKenzie Patton run wild. Spleet scored a run and stole Three bases. while going 2-for-4, while Patton scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3. Emma Smith was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with four stolen bases.

Newton-Conover always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .545. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Hickory only posted an OBP of .371.

The victory got Newton-Conover back to even at 1-1. As for Hickory, their loss dropped their record down to an identical 1-1.

Newton-Conover has already played their next contest, a 19-3 defeat against West Caldwell on the 4th. As for Hickory, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next match, a 14-4 loss against East Lincoln on the 11th.
