Softball Recap: Make It Nine in a Row for Huntington

Huntington had already won eight in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11 runs) and they went ahead and made it nine on Friday. They were the clear victors by a 15-0 margin over the Newton Eagles. The result was nothing new for the Red Devils, who have now won 13 contests by seven runs or more so far this season.

Riley Whitley made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Whitley was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI, one triple, and one run.

In other batting news, Huntington got a massive performance out of Natalie Mullins, who scored two runs and stole five bases while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Aubrie Bumstead, who scored three runs and stole four bases while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances.

Huntington always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .760. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Huntington pushed their record up to 16-2 with the win, which was their seventh straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.9 runs on average over those games. As for Newton, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost 13 of their last 14 games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-17 record this season.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Huntington is set to face off against their familiar foe Pollok Central at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Red Devils 2.1, the Bulldogs 3.3) so any runs scored will be well earned. Meanwhile, Newton will square off against rival Woodville at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
