Basketball Recap: Red Cloud Comes Up Short

If Red Cloud was feeling good fresh off their 55-19 takedown of Franklin last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Red Cloud Warriors took a 56-52 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Lawrence-Nelson Raiders. The Warriors were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Raiders earlier this season, when they won 54-38.

When it comes to explaining why Red Cloud lost on Tuesday, don't look at Gage Ely. Despite the final result, he almost dropped a double-double with 19 points and nine boards. Ely's evening made it four games in a row in which he has scored at least 15 points. Another player making a difference was Conner Rust, who posted nine points and five steals.

Lawrence-Nelson was led to victory by Wyatt Frey and Aidan Zikmund. Frey dropped a double-double with 19 points and 15 rebounds, while Zikmund had seven points along with six assists and six boards. Frey is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as he's now pulled down eight or more in each of the last 14 games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Sawyer Cox, who scored eight points and five boards.

Red Cloud has been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 15-7 record this season. The victory was the fifth in a row for Lawrence-Nelson, bringing their record for this year to 15-7.

Red Cloud does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Lawrence-Nelson, they will face off against Silver Lake at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
