A big 21-point third quarter helped carry
Monte Vista (Colo.) to a 41-18 victory over
Dolores (Colo.) on Saturday.
The Pirates scored on three rushing touchdowns in the quarter, including two by
Shadron Wenta.
Monte Vista was up 20-12 at the half after taking the lead on a touchdown pass by
Michael Sanchez to
Jeff Cooper in the first quarter.
MV expanded its lead to 23 points entering the fourth quarter. The Pirates scored four times in the third, including once on a touchdown run by Wenta.
Kolton Schull made a difference for the Bears. The senior quarterback threw two touchdowns and ran for one touchdown.
Wenta was the top performer for Monte Vista. The senior running back ran for two touchdowns. He has now scored 10 touchdowns on the season.
A 41-10 Monte Vista victory was the result when the squads faced off last season.
The loss comes after Dolores defeated Center 24-7 last week. With the win the Pirates extended their winning streak to three games. The loss snapped Dolores' 2-game winning streak.
Dolores (3-4) goes up against Centauri in a 1A Southern Peaks game matchup next week, while Monte Vista (6-1) locks horns with Center also in a 1A Southern Peaks game.
