The South Gwinnett Comets had to endure a four-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 31-28 victory over Newton on Thursday. The win was all the more spectacular given South Gwinnett's disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia football rankings (they are ranked 69th, while Newton is ranked seventh).
Among those leading the charge was Jared Echols, who threw for 230 yards and a touchdown while picking up 11.0 yards per attempt. Aj Pigford also helped out with an impressive 81 receiving yards.
Several Rams players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Marcus Calwise, who picked up 191 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Calwise's longest reception was for an incredible 87 yards. Another player making a difference was Deron Benson, who threw for 241 yards and three touchdowns while completing 73.7% of his passes.
South Gwinnett's victory bumped their record up to 5-5. As for Newton, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 8-2.
South Gwinnett will be playing at home against Brookwood at 7:30 p.m. on November 3rd. Brookwood is coming into the game on a three-game losing streak. As for Newton, they will head out on the road to face off against Archer at 7:30 p.m. on November 3rd. Archer is coming into the match hot, having won their last four games.
