Softball Recap: Century Has No Trouble Against Newberg

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Sherwood, Century was happy to have turned things around on Tuesday. Everything went their way against the Newberg Tigers as they made off with a 12-2 win. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Jaguars as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.

Alyssa Loza was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, firing off two home runs, six RBI, and three runs while going 3-for-4.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Alycia Martinez, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. Those four hits gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Hailey Kinney, who went 1-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.

Century kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.6 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 matches they've averaged 8.8.

Century's win bumped their record up to 9-13. As for Newberg, they have been struggling recently as they've lost nine of their last ten contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-13 record this season.

Century and Newberg could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Oregon Rankings. The Jaguars (ranked 84th) will meet Forest Grove (ranked 19th) at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The timing isn't great for Century: they have been struggling with three straight losses at home, while the Vikings have snatched up seven consecutive wins on the road. Meanwhile, Newberg will square off against Sherwood at 5:00 p.m. on Friday with a big rank disadvantage (116 vs. 3).
