Baseball Recap: St. Augustine Catholic's Losing Streak Is a Thing of the Past

St. Augustine Catholic had to endure a five-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They were the clear victors by a 19-2 margin over the Santa Rita Eagles on Monday. With that victory, the Wolves brought their scoring average up to 6.4 runs per game.

Jonny Samaneigo was a major factor no matter where he played. He struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits (and not a single walk). He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two RBI. Those RBI marked the first that he brought in this season.

In other batting news, Alex Martinez and Sergio Cordova did most of the damage at the plate: Martinez went a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBI, one triple, and one run, while Cordova scored three runs while going 2-for-3. Those four RBI gave Martinez a new career-high. Gabriel Dominguez was another key player, scoring a run while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances.

St. Augustine Catholic hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Santa Rita struck out eight times.

St. Augustine Catholic picked up their first road win, bumping their record up to 2-8. As for Santa Rita, they are on a 15-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-2.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. St. Augustine Catholic will face off against St. David at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday. St. Augustine Catholic's pitchers better be ready for this one: St. David has averaged an impressive 6.1 runs per game this season. As for Santa Rita, they will take on Fort Thomas at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
