Gates County is preparing for their first conference matchup of the season on Tuesday. They will face off against the Martin County Gators at 6:00 p.m. After the two teams made easy work of their previous opponents, one won't be so lucky on Tuesday.
Gates County will roll into the matchup after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up two runs on Tuesday, then bounced right back against Cape Hatteras on Thursday. Gates County never let Cape Hatteras get on the board and left with a 12-0 victory. With that win, the Red Barons brought their scoring average up to 6.3 runs per game.
Jacob Ross made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Those zero hits allowed gave him a new career-low. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-2.

In other batting news, Gates County got a massive performance out of Lyric Pittman, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. Pittman has become a key player for Gates County: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 0-3 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Jack Greene, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one triple.
Gates County always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .576. The last time their OBP was this high was back in March of 2024.
Meanwhile, Martin County put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They were the clear victor by a 9-1 margin over Roanoke Rapids. Fans of the Gators have seen this all before: every one of the games they've played this season has ended in a blowout of 6+ runs.
Gates County's record is now 2-4. As for Martin County, their victory was their 13th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 9-0.
Gates County came out on top in a nail-biter against Martin County in their previous meeting back in March of 2024, sneaking past 6-5. Does Gates County have another victory up their sleeve, or will Martin County turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
