5A Region I District 8 recap Sept. 26, 2012
Peter Shelburne and Derick Bates provided fans with a highlight when they connected against Round Rock. The connection was good for 80 yards, the longest such play in 5A Region I District 8 this season.
Midway was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from third to first in the league.
Belton's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Shelburne threw for 250 and three touchdowns and Bates had 102 yards receiving. On the ground Cameron Myers chipped in 60 yards.
Belton's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Tigers feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Shelburne has thrown for 554 yards and five touchdowns this season, while Bates has 10 catches for 229 yards. Brandon Rhoads leads the league in rushing with 309 yards.
Two highly touted recruits will be in the spotlight when Harker Heights and the Tigers meet this week. The Knights features well-regarded senior Darius James while Belton has Durham Smythe, a sought after senior.
A big matchup in 5A Region I District 8 this week will be when Copperas Cove takes on Killeen. The Bulldawgs are in seventh place, while the Kangaroos are in second place.
Ellison moved up to 658 from 720 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league.
