The high school football season in Tennessee came to a close last weekend after crowning nine BlueCross Bowl state champions at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga.
Lipscomb Academy (Nashville) was among the victors, beating
Christ Presbyterian Academy (Nashville) 42-0 to capture its second straight Division II-AA title. That victory helped the Mustangs to the No. 1 ranking in the final state MaxPreps Top 25.
MaxPreps Tennessee Football Player of the Year
Junior Sherrill, who is set to play football at Vanderbilt next fall, piled up 201 offensive yards and four touchdowns to allow outgoing head coach Trent Dilfer to win big in his last game with the program.
Eric Taylor helped
Oakland (Murfreesboro) win its third straight Class 6A state title by running for 175 yards and four scores. The Patriots finish the season ranked second and have claimed four of the last five 6A state championships.
Zach Lunsford and
Luke Cannon hooked up three times for 73 yards and a trio of scores to help carry
Alcoa to the Class 3A state title and the state's No. 12 ranking. Lunsford threw for 163 yards in the title tilt. The Tornadoes have won eight straight state championships and nine of the last 10, going 135-11 over that span.
