MaxPreps is pleased to announce that the
South Pointe (Rock Hill, S.C.)Stallions have officially been named to the 12th Annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard, which is in its 12th year honoring football.
This is one of the most prestigious team awards in all of high school sports and it is an exclusive honor reserved for the top 100 teams nationwide. In order to be eligible, a team must win a state championship and be highly ranked in the
MaxPreps National Rankings. For football, only 50 of the country's best are invited and with nearly 17,000 competing varsity teams. This puts the Stallions ahead of 99.9 percent of their opponents!
The Stallions have found a winning formula that has led to their third straight
Class 4A State Championship. The Hartsville Red Foxes gave themselves an opportunity to avenge a 2014 state championship loss to South Pointe, but once again the Stallions talent and execution was too much to overcome.
Quarterback Derion Kendrick had a remarkably efficient
game throwing for 261 yards and five touchdowns, three to Steven Gilmore; both players are all over the University of South Carolina's radar. Tiyon Evans also carved up the Hartsville defense with 264 yards rushing and a TD.
The Red Foxes actually had the lead at the end of the first quarter 7-3, but the second quarter was all South Pointe as they took a 30-14 lead going into halftime. The Stallion players used their experience to hold on to the lead in the second half and finish their championship season with a 51-28 victory.
In order to be eligible, the team not only had to be nationally ranked, but also had to win a state championship. Beating Hartsville 51- 28 on Dec. 17 marked the completion of an incredible 15-1 season — and earned South Pointe an invitation to the Tour of Champions. The Stallions championship season helped them finish
No.2 in the state, and
No. 105 in MaxPreps National Rankings.
These incredible season achievements have earned the South Pointe Stallions an invitation to the 12th Annual Tour of Champions.
