The Jarrell Cougars waltzed into their contest Tuesday with four straight wins but they left with five. They walked away with a 48-36 victory over Gatesville. Given Jarrell's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 350th, while Gatesville is ranked 718th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Jarrell found their leader in underclassman Aniya Taylor, who scored 21 points along with five rebounds and three steals. The contest was Taylor's 18th in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Lamyre' Fitch, who scored nine points along with three steals.
Jarrell is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 12-6 record this season. As for Gatesville, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 6-9.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Jarrell will face off against Giddings at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Gatesville will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Lampasas at 6:15 p.m. on January 2, 2024.
