Hobgood Charter strolled into their game on Friday with a perfect record and they left with the same. They blew past the Columbia Wildcats 14-4. While the Raiders didn't have the best season last year (they finished 8-10), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
ETHAN GARNER and JACOB TUTOR were major factors no matter where they played. On the mound, GARNER tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, TUTOR tossed 2.1 innings while giving up just one earned run but no hits. At the plate, GARNER got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run, while TUTOR went 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base. Those two stolen bases gave GARNER a new career-high.
In other pitching news, BRYCE JONES looked comfortable as he tossed 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances.
Back at the plate, LUKE LANIER and MASON MILLS did most of the damage at the plate: LANIER got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double, while MILLS went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Those three stolen bases gave MILLS a new career-high. TREY HARRIS was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Hobgood Charter always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .568. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .552 or higher in seven consecutive matchups.
Hobgood Charter's record now sits at 8-0. As for Columbia, they are on a seven-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-5.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming contests. Hobgood Charter will challenge North Edgecombe at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Columbia, they will take on Eastern Christian HomeSchool at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The Trailblazers' pitching crew has only allowed 2.2 runs per game this season, so the Wildcats' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
