Baldwin has gone 7-1 against Newberry recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Saturday. The Indians will host the Panthers at 10:00 a.m. Baldwin has a tough task ahead: they'll enter the contest with four straight losses, while Newberry will come in with four straight wins.
On Friday, Baldwin came up short against Florida State University High School and fell 5-1.
Baldwin saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Landon Sheppard, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one run.
Meanwhile, Newberry was able to grind out a solid victory over Oakleaf on Friday, taking the game 7-4.
Brantley McCoy made a splash while hitting and pitching. He struck out ten batters over 6.1 innings while giving up just two earned runs off one hit. Those ten strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, Tavis Honeycutt was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. Honeycutt is crushing it when it comes to home runs: he's launched at least one every time he's taken the field this season. Aiden Michaux was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Newberry was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .423. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .423 or higher in three consecutive games.
Newberry's win bumped their record up to 4-0. As for Baldwin, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-4.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Saturday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Baldwin has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.4 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Newberry struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.5 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Baldwin came out on top in a nail-biter against Newberry in their previous meeting back in February of 2024, sneaking past 6-5. Do the Indians have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Panthers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
