Los Osos is on a five-game streak of home wins, while Don Lugo is on a ten-game streak of away wins (dating back to last season): one of those streaks is about to end. The Los Osos Grizzlies will take on the Don Lugo Conquistadores in a tournament on Saturday. Los Osos is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.5 runs per game this season.
While Los Osos didn't have the best season last year (they finished 8-15-1), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They were the clear victor by a 16-1 margin over Capistrano Valley Christian on Friday. The Grizzlies' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Jazzlynn Rodriguez and Abigail Merchant made a splash while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Rodriguez tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Merchant pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances. At bat, Rodriguez scored two runs while going 2-for-3, while Merchant went 1-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Makenna Estep and Kassandra Granillo did most of the damage at the plate: Estep went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI, while Granillo went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. The dominant performance also gave Granillo a new career-high in hits (two). Another player making a difference was Josselyn Ludwig, who scored two runs while going 1-for-1.
Los Osos was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .630. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, Don Lugo posted their closest win since April 4, 2024 on Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-5 victory over Riverside Prep.
Leylah Ramirez was excellent, scoring a run and stealing two bases while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances. Alyssa Martinez was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-2.
Don Lugo's win bumped their record up to 4-2. As for Los Osos, their victory bumped their record up to 9-2-1.
Saturday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Los Osos hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .342. However, it's not like Don Lugo struggles in that department as they've averaged .354. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Los Osos came up short against Don Lugo in their previous meeting back in March of 2017, falling 8-4. Can Los Osos avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
