It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but the Sallisaw Black Diamonds had no problem doing just that on Friday. They walked away with a 35-28 victory over Cushing. The score was all tied up 14-14 at the break, but Sallisaw was the better team in the second half.
Brock Streun continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 112 yards and two touchdowns, while also throwing for 157 yards and two touchdowns. Sallisaw also got a significant boost from Cole Stephens, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 119 yards.
Despite the loss, Cushing still got an impressive performance from john hilligoss, who rushed for 145 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 9.1 yards per carry, and also threw for 191 yards and two touchdowns. Another player making a difference was Brady Matheson, who picked up 115 receiving yards and a touchdown.
The victory makes it two in a row for Sallisaw and bumps their season record up to 7-5. As for Cushing, their loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 8-3.
Sallisaw will head out on the road to face off against Blanchard at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Blanchard will be looking to extend their current nine-game winning streak. Cushing does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
