By Roger Brown MaxPreps.com Chris Crowley called it a moment he'll remember for the rest of his life. Crowley, a senior guard on the Epping High School boys basketball team, entered his team's game against Hillsboro-Deering needing 32 points to reach the 1,000-point plateau for his career. He had scored 31 points when he made a lay-up and was fouled with 8.7 seconds to play. He finished with 34 points in Epping's 65-47 victory. "This is something I'll never forget," Crowley said. "I'll watch this game tape when I'm 90 years old." Crowley became the sixth player in the program's history to score at least 1,000 points, joining Ryan Newman (2003), Matt Price (1998), Denny Wood (1991), Ryan Gatchell (1990) and Lionel Levesque (1965). Gatchell completed his high school career with 2,602 points. Crowley scored 22 of his 34 points in the second half, and 12 points in the final four minutes. "He had a great second half," Hillsboro-Deering coach Curt McCandless said. "He got comfortable and we let him. It was a great night for him." Crowley has been a varsity starter since his freshman season, and has served as a team captain in each of the past three years. "The way the crowd and the team were pushing for him to get it is a testament to how good a leader he is and how tight a team we've become," Epping coach Tim Sullivan said. "It's such a huge accomplishment for not only Chris, but also for the team. This is a great night for Chris and Epping basketball, and to do it in front of the home fans makes it even more special." Girls Basketball: Premier Coaching Matchup on Tap Two of the state's most successful coaches will square off when Londonderry plays at Winnacunnet on Tuesday night. Londonderry's John Fagula and Winnacunnet's Ed Beattie are both in the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. Fagula guided Nashua (now Nashua South) to 11 Class L championships before he took the Londonderry job. He won his 500th game as a varsity head coach earlier this season. Beattie won his third Class L title with Winnacunnet last winter. Winnacunnet will enter the contest with a 9-1 record. The Warriors are tied for first place with Manchester Central. Londonderry is 8-2 and owns sole possession of fourth place. Salem, which is 8-1, is in third. Football: Shrine All-Star Teams to be Released Soon Rosters for this year's Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl will be released in early February. Both head coaches, New Hampshire's Craig Kozens (Laconia) and Vermont's Mike Law (U-32), met with their respective selection committees earlier this month. Each team will have a 36-player roster. "We were looking for linemen on both sides of the ball who could really move their feet," Law said. "New Hampshire always seems to have some good athletes up front." New Hampshire won last year's game, 23-20, and has a 39-13-2 advantage in the series. The teams will report to training camp on July 23; this year's game will be played Aug. 2 at Dartmouth's Memorial Field. Boys Basketball: Portsmouth Gets Second Chance The marquee game in the state this week will occur Tuesday night, when Portsmouth plays at Oyster River in a contest between two of the top teams in Class I. Oyster River (10-0) is the only undefeated team in Class I. The Bobcats beat Portsmouth by 65-48 on opening night. Portsmouth (9-1) has won nine in a row since its loss to Oyster River. The Clippers beat the Bobcats in the Class I quarterfinals last season. Boys Hockey: Kennett Remains Perfect Kennett received two goals and an assist from Michael Skelton and 25 saves from Ricky Gaudreau and raised its Division III record to 9-0-0 with a 6-2 victory over Hollis-Brookline on Saturday. Derek North added a goal and an assist for Kennett, which is the only unbeaten team in the state. Every other Division III team has at least two losses. |
