The Goose Creek Gators typically have all the answers at home, but on Tuesday the Cane Bay Cobras proved too difficult a challenge. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 52-49 win over the Gators. Cane Bay didn't have much to brag about two games back, but this victory makes it their second in a row.
Cane Bay got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Ella Hill out in front who scored 19 points along with seven rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Hill has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Anai Custodio, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 18 rebounds.
Despite the loss, Goose Creek saw an underclassman step up: Natalia Madison scored 17 points along with five rebounds. It was the first time this season that Madison scored 15 or more points. Another player making a difference was Celeste Griffen, who scored nine points.
Goose Creek struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only two offensive rebounds. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Cane Bay pulled down 18 offensive rebounds.
Cane Bay's win bumped their record up to 8-16. As for Goose Creek, their defeat ended a seven-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 15-7.
Cane Bay will take on Berkeley at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Berkeley presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Cane Bay in South Carolina (Berkeley is ranked 34th, while Cane Bay is ranked 152nd). As for Goose Creek, they will head out on the road to square off against Wando at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Wando focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 19 on Tuesday.
