The football competition has been epic. The boys basketball is Utah’s ACC. And now add girls hoops to the list of why Region 4 is the most competitive grouping in the state. Amy Krommenhoek (25), American Fork

American Fork has reloaded from losing four of its five starters from last year. Brighton is off to a 6-0 start. Pleasant Grove has 6-foot-6 Jen Hamson. Alta has the state’s most promising point guard and a great two-player scoring combo. And you can never count out Lone Peak.
Amy Krommenhoek is the AF lone returner from last season but has gotten help from Grace Farnsworth, Lanini Kalumbi and Kylie Allen in a 4-1 start.
Brighton, on the other hand, has a strong core of returners including Kylie Hirschi, Shelbi Everett, Kimberly Ringwood and Katie Tominaga. Hamson, a BYU signee, will keep Pleasant Grove in the mix. Alta has point guard Makenzi Morrison and shooting guard Becca Beaudoin pacing a 5-0 start while Lone Peak is led by post player Whitney Johnson.
Outside of Region 4, Syracuse has made the most noise so far with a 5-0 start behind senior Jen Hazlett.
4A: Springville or Skyview?
Beating American Fork and having two Division I signees has Springville thinking state championship.
Junior Lexie Eaton has already committed to BYU and Sadie Clements will play at Sacramento State. The Red Devils return most of the squad that lost to Mountain View in the state title game last season.
Skyview’s also in the running and should be with 4A MVP Amy Andrus returning along with the state’s best defensive player, Nicole Hansen. However, the Bobcats lost their best outside shooter Taylor Rock to a torn ACL.
3A: Morgan on the move
A 16-point victory over defending state champion Wasatch now puts Morgan in the frontrunner role in 3A. The Trojans (7-0) have two players, Angela Blazzard and Ashley Garfield, averaging 12 points a game.
Wasatch is off to a slow 3-3 start, but is playing strong defense and has the shooting of Jordyn Richardson. Richfield is 6-0 and winning close games while Judge Memorial is 4-0 with a strong challenge Thursday against 4A Lehi.
2A: Can Porter power Layton Christian?
Jasmine Porter led Layton Christian to a volleyball title. Can she do it in basketball?
Why not? She’s averaging 25 points a game and the Eagles are 5-1 with the only loss coming to 3A Juan Diego. Enterprise could make a run behind Tressa Lyman, who is averaging 20 a game.
1A: Up for grabs
Rich and Piute are the teams to watch, along with Whitehorse, Panguitch and Duchesne.
