The Caston Comets will head out on the road to face off against the Peru Tigers at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Caston is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.7 runs per game this season.
Caston is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 11 runs last Monday, they were much more limited against Winamac on Thursday. They came up short against the Warriors, falling 12-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Comets have suffered against the Warriors since May 7, 2019.
Caston saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mia Mersch, who went 2-for-3 with one run.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Peru). They were the clear victors by a 14-3 margin over Argos on Thursday. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest victory of the season.
Addy Marchand spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and two unearned) runs on three hits and racked up seven Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Lilly Steele, who fired off one home run, three triples, and four runs while going 4-for-5. Those three triples gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Pheobe Steele, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs.
Peru kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Argos only managed four.
Peru's win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 3-7. As for Caston, the loss snapped their winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 6-4 record.
Peru's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Caston has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 8.7 hits per game. It's a different story for Peru, though, as they've been averaging 8.7 hits. Given Caston's sizable advantage in that area, the Tigers will need to find a way to close that gap.
Caston might still be hurting after the 8-2 defeat they got from Peru in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Comets avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
