Lumberton has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will take on the Needville Bluejays at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Lumberton had no problem doing just that on Friday. They put the hurt on Athens with a sharp 40-14 win. Lumberton pushed the score to 37-7 by the end of the third, a deficit Athens cut but never quite recovered from.
Lumberton got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Lucas Powell out in front who threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns while completing 75.9% of his passes, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. Lumberton also got a significant boost from Chase Williams, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 80 yards.
Meanwhile, Needville blew past Yates, posting a 49-14 victory on the road. With Needville ahead 42-6 at the half, the game was all but over already.
Da'Shawn Burton continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 230 yards and three touchdowns on only 15 carries. Burton's longest rush was for an incredible 88 yards. Keilan Sweeny was another key contributor, rushing for 79 yards and a touchdown on only eight carries.
Lumberton's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-3. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 46.5 points per game. As for Needville, their win bumped their record up to 9-2.
