SAN GABRIEL, Calif. -
El Monte (Calif.) had a comfortable lead entering the fourth quarter, but used 16 fourth quarter points to seal the 38-14 victory over
Gabrielino (San Gabriel, Calif.).
The Lions were up 14-7 at the half after taking the lead on a touchdown pass by
Brandon Martinez to
Josh Morales in the first quarter.
El Monte expanded its lead to 15 points entering the fourth quarter. EM scored two times in the third, including once on a touchdown run by
Bryan Luevano.
With the win the Lions extended their winning streak to five games. El Monte defeated the Vikings 38-20 last week.
Martinez played well for EM in the victory. The senior quarterback threw three touchdowns. He has now scored 11 touchdowns on the season.
The Eagles'
Elijah Peters played well. The sophomore quarterback threw one touchdown. He has now scored six touchdowns on the season.
The Lions had struggled this season, allowing 37.3 points per game. But El Monte tightened up and held Gabrielino well below its season average of 25.4 points per game. GHS came in surrendering 9.3 points per game this season. The San Gabriel school struggled against EM, which came in averaging 42.0 points per game.
When the two teams played each other last season, the Lions came away with a 48-28 victory.
The defeat comes as a step back for Gabrielino, which notched a 13-7 victory over Rosemead in its previous outing.
In a Mission Valley game next week Gabrielino (7-2) takes on Arroyo, and El Monte (7-2) will go up against South El Monte also in a Mission Valley game.
