Evansville Mater Dei is 9-1 against Evansville Harrison since April of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Wildcats will host the Warriors at 5:00 p.m. Evansville Mater Dei is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.7 runs per game this season.
Evansville Mater Dei proved they can win big on Tuesday (they won by 23) and on Wednesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Boonville, sneaking past 3-2.
Chelsea Merkley made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she tossed seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one home run, two RBI, and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Josie Friend, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run.
Meanwhile, Evansville Harrison was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They came up short against Evansville North, falling 7-1.
Evansville Harrison saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Joselyn Wade, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one run. Myah Seaton also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Evansville Mater Dei has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 10-8 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Evansville Harrison, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-11.
Evansville Harrison's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Evansville Mater Dei has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.7 hits per game. It's a different story for Evansville Harrison, though, as they've been averaging 10.4 hits. Given Evansville Mater Dei's sizable advantage in that area, the Warriors will need to find a way to close that gap.
Evansville Mater Dei took their victory against Evansville Harrison in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 16-1 score. Do the Wildcats have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Warriors turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
