Meanwhile, Marshall waltzed into their contest on Friday with four straight wins... but they left with five. Everything went their way against the Wildcats as they made off with a 13-6 win. Marshall's hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Blayne Francis and Kade Patton were a major factor while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Francis pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Meanwhile, Patton pitched three innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit (he also didn't allow any walks). He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in five consecutive pitching appearances. At bat, Francis scored a run while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances, while Patton scored three runs and stole a base.
In other batting news, RJ Mattas was excellent, scoring three runs while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances.
Newton's victory ended a four-game drought at home and bumped them up to 8-9. As for Marshall, they pushed their record up to 8-4 with that win, which was their third straight on the road.
