Effingham and Mahomet-Seymour are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2019, but likely not for long. The Hearts will host the Bulldogs at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Effingham is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.7 runs per game this season.
Having struggled with three defeats in a row, Effingham turned things around against Marshall on Wednesday. They put the hurt on the Lions with a sharp 13-1 win. The Hearts not only won on Wednesday, but they posted their biggest win since May 1, 2024.
Saige Althoff made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She pitched four innings while giving up just one earned run off eight hits. Althoff was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 1-for-1. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games she's played.
In other batting news, Effingham got a massive performance out of Jerzi Bierman, who scored three runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-4. That's the most stolen bases Bierman has posted since back in May of 2024. Alyssa Martin was another key player, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and two doubles.
Effingham always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .571. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, after soaring to 14 runs the game before, Mahomet-Seymour was a bit more limited in their matchup on Thursday. They fell just short of Normal West by a score of 2-1. The game marked the Bulldogs' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.
Ainsley Whitaker spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on nine hits and racked up six Ks.
At the plate, Maddie Logsdon was cooking despite her team's loss, going 1-for-3 with one home run.
Mahomet-Seymour has also been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-6 record this season. Even worse, they were so close so many times: the losses came by an average of only one runs. As for Effingham, their victory bumped their record up to 3-4.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Saturday. Effingham hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 2.1 home runs per game. However, it's not like Mahomet-Seymour struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.6 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Effingham took their win against Mahomet-Seymour when the teams last played back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 9-0 score. Do the Hearts have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Bulldogs turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
