Softball Recap: Tuesday's Win Is Mathis' Seventh in Last Eight Outings

Mathis had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the ten-run drubbing they dealt George West on Tuesday. The Pirates blew past the Longhorns 12-2. Considering the Pirates have won seven games by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Alyssa Herrera made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out 11 batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off seven hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent : she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4.

In other batting news, Mathis got a massive performance out of Lexi Rodriguez, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three doubles, two runs, and two RBI. Those three hits gave Rodriguez a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Charleen Hernandez, who scored a run while going 3-for-4.

Mathis has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 11-6-1 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for George West, they have been struggling recently as they've lost ten of their last 12 contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-15 record this season.

Mathis will take on West Oso at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Pirates are facing the Bears at the right time seeing as the Bears are stuck on an 11-game losing streak. As for George West, they will square off against Taft at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
