Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Emerson). They claimed a resounding 45-7 win over Denison on the road. The score at the end of the third wound up being the final score as the Mavericks just coasted through the last quarter.
DJ Shelton had a dynamite game for Emerson, throwing for 263 yards and three touchdowns on only 19 passes. Kelton Wafer also helped out with an impressive 121 receiving yards.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Emerson was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 203 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.
Memorial's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-3. As for Emerson, their record is now 3-1.
Memorial was taken down by Emerson 56-14 in their previous matchup back in October of 2023. Thankfully for Memorial, Michael Hawkins (who threw for 279 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 14.0 yards per attempt, and also rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown on only five carries) won't be suiting up this time.
