The Wellsboro Hornets will head out to challenge the Athens Wildcats at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Wellsboro is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8 runs per game this season.
Wellsboro proved they can win big on Saturday (they won by 15) and on Thursday they proved they can win the close ones too. They had just enough and edged out Towanda 1-0. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Hornets have posted since May 14, 2024.
Towanda's batters probably weren't too happy with Maxwell Mascho, who pitched a no hitter and racked up 11 Ks (he gave up a single walk). Mascho has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Wellsboro's win was truly a team effort as six different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Griffin Morral, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base and one RBI. That stolen base marked the first that Morral has snagged this season.
Wellsboro was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .355 or higher in four consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, Athens got the win against Wyalusing Valley on Thursday by a conclusive 11-1. The Wildcats might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine games by six runs or more this season.
Kamdyn Wheeler spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on one hit.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Brady Flynn, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Troy Rosenbloom was another key player, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs.
Athens pushed their record up to 11-2 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for Wellsboro, their record is now 6-7.
Wellsboro might still be hurting after the 16-10 loss they got from Athens in their previous meeting back in March. Can the Hornets avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
